Our story.

Nicaragua Medical Missions is a non-profit organization, dedicated to serving those we meet in Nicaragua with love, respect, & the right to health care.

NMM was originally organized by students in the Christian Medical Association at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The core of our organization remains this group of medical students, physicians, health care providers, and missionaries who travel each year to care for the spiritual and medical needs of each Nicaraguan that we meet. We look to learn about and practice our profession within the framework of a faith-based initiative to those communities in need.

For over a decade we have been traveling to communities around the capital city of Managua. In doing so, we have built a firm foundation for a ministry of healing, both physically and spiritually. In 2013, we had 83 healthcare providers and students help more than 900 patients on one weekend trip.

Each year, medical students plan and organize this short-term mission trip, with the help of our missionary partners in Nicaragua. Nicaragua Medical Missions has taken over $250,000 worth of medications and supplies annually to provide for some of the most impoverished communities around Managua. Services including health screening, treatment, health education, and spiritual support have been the mainstays for each trip. Moreover, follow-up efforts are made through local doctors and clinics in an attempt to provide more sustained care.

As students have graduated into careers and medical practices of their own, Nicaragua Medical Missions continues to take on new dimensions beyond that original spring missions trip. Now the organization includes mission projects led by individual doctors and clinics, expanded long-term volunteers who participate in research and treatment, internships and residencies, and more.

WELCOME FROM DR. CHEN

Thank you for your interest in Nicaragua Medical Missions. We hope this site gives you a sense of who we are and the work we're doing in one of the most underserved parts of the world.

My wife, Jessica, and I met in Nicaragua on a medical mission trip, and the country has been part of our lives, and our kids lives, ever since. We've been involved in Nicaragua for nearly twenty years, and we've been blessed to see our opportunities expand exponentially in just the past few years.

We hope to see you soon on a life-changing project in one of the greatest countries in the world.
